The 20th annual Du Quoin Holiday Lights Fair, like the 19 that came before it, is a labor of love. It opened for the 2019 season on Thanksgiving evening, giving viewers more than three miles of lighted displays, some familiar and some new.
And before the five to six weeks are over, as many as 20,000 to 30,000 people will have come to Du Quoin to see it, said Mayor Guy Alongi.
He credits the Du Quoin Tourism Commission with doing an "incredible" job at the fairgrounds and inside the Exhibition Hall.
Alongi said a small crew of maybe four people sets up all the outside displays. Another group of Tourism Commission women set up the Expo Hall, an added attraction that will be open Dec. 6-8, Dec. 13-15 and Dec. 20-22. Inside are food and craft vendors, live music, train rides, a Kids Corner, model train displays, visits with Santa, door prizes and much more.
The benefit to Du Quoin is great, so if city workers have a little extra time on their hands they give the Tourism Commission a helping hand, Alongi said.
