St. Mary's School students take honors in poetry

Four students at St. Mary's Catholic School in Chester submitted award-winning poetry to this year's SWIC Poetry Contest, sponsored by the Southwestern Illinois College Red Bud Campus.

Winners are:

• Jack Heffernan, the son of Michael and Joanie Heffernan, won first place at the sixth grade level for his poem, "The Hunter".

• Kanon Jany, the son of Trisha and Pete Jany, won first place at the fourth grade level for his poem titled, "Beach".

• Kolton Jany, son of Trisha and Pete Jany, won second place at the sixth grade level for his poem, "Baseball".

• Ethan Colvis, son of Matt and Carrie Colvis, won third place at the fifth grade level for his poem, "Hunting".

St. Mary's School has participated in this contest for many years, and over the years the competition has grown from a few entries to this current year of 137 entries.

All winning participants were invited to a recognition ceremony on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, where they joined other winners in a poetry reading.

St. Mary's School congratulates each one of its students for their outstanding work in this competition.
