A 59-year-old man found dead inside a car at the employee parking lot at Fort de Chartres in Prairie du Rocher on Wednesday has preliminarily been ruled to have died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Randolph County Coroner Carlos Barbour said the name of the man, who was a resident of University City, Mo., is being withheld at this time due to sensitivity to the family.

Police scanner traffic indicated the vehicle was reported around noon and with its back window busted out.

"Conservation people were out mowing grass at the fort and noticed the vehicle there and turned it in," Barbour said.

Law enforcement arrived and found the man deceased. He was pronounced dead at 1:54 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and coroner's office.
