MARION -- The Marion Garden Club has picked Carol Murphy and Dudley Cantrell's garden located at 1204 E. Parham St. as its Garden of the Month for June. The couple also maintain the property at 1202 E. Parham.
Murphy and Cantrell have lived in the home for 15 years and have developed not only the sides and front of their home but have also done extensive work in the backyard of both these lots.
There are two large Burning Bushes that are on either side of the front porch, and as you walk down the drive, you will find plantings that run the length of the drive, with Dailies, miniature Holly Hocks, Knock-Out Roses, Banana Palms, and annuals planted to fill in underneath. On the fence around the backyard, there are Dailies and Cannas with Wisteria peaking over from the backyard.
On the other side of the home, there are Dailies, Azelias and Hostas with a little bicycle as an accent that has been re-purposed as a flower pot holder.
They both have inspired this garden, with Carol doing a lot of the creative design and has a nice collection of vintage bird houses. Dudley also likes to grow vegetables and gourds. The gourds he has painted and placed in hanging pots to enjoy. They both are drawn to old-fashioned plants.
This is a wonderful garden to drive by as you are enjoying a sunny afternoon. Be sure to go slow, because you don't want to miss the views down the side of this home.
Marion Garden Club is a member of Garden Clubs of Illinois and National Garden Clubs. We will be looking for July's Garden of the Month toward the end of June, and if you have suggestions, they can be left at the website: mariongardenclubofillinois.weebly.com.
