Get your library trivia team together

It is not too late to sign up a team for the Friends of the Chester Public Library Trivia Night, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday, July 12 at the library. The Friends' "not-so-serious" trivia is a fun event that raises funds to support programs at the Chester Library. There is no set fee to play (suggested donation is $10 per player). Each team can have up to eight players, and participants should bring their own food and drinks to this "after hours" event. Info and registration: (618) 826-3711.

SMSU Archives gifted rare 30-Star Flag

Southeast Missouri State University is celebrating the recent addition of "The 30-Star Flag" to its Special Collections and Archives. This piece of history, which became the official flag of the United States on July 4, 1848, recently was donated to Southeast by George Ann Huck of Commerce, Missouri. The flag commemorates the addition of Wisconsin as the 30th state in the Union. Despite having voted against becoming a state four times, Wisconsins voted to approve statehood on May 29, 1848. "The 30-Star Flag" was the official flag until 1851 when California joined the Union. The flag was discovered in an attic.
