Jeff Korando of Korando Heating and Cooling of Chester has presented the Chester Fire Department with a $4,000 washing machine designed to thoroughly clean fire gear for Chester firefighters.

For six months, Korando has been setting aside $100 for every new unit sold, to put enough money together for this washer.

Chester Fire Chief Marty Bert said the special washer can wash only one set of fire gear at a time. It will save lives, he said, because it cleans away dangerous carcinogens and other harmful agents that collect on fire gear while the firefighters are fighting fires.

Korando said the special machine is high-tech and has just the right water temperature, spin cycles and other features that can adequately clean fire gear.
