Chester High School is smack dab in the middle of Homecoming Week 2019, which is dedicated to the theme of "Decades."
The CHS Student Council has had a series of "Dress Up Days" to create fun and interest throughout the week. Monday was "America Monday" and students wore red, white, and blue. Tuesday was "Class Color Day," with seniors in red, juniors in purple, sophomores in yellow and freshmen in blue.
Today is the clever "Favorite Iconic Figure Day" as students will dress as their favorite iconic figure from "decades" ago.
Thursday will be "Decades Day," when seniors will dress in 90s apparel; juniors will dress like kids did in the 80s; sophomores have the 70s and freshmen will be raiding their grandparents closets for 1960s apparel.
Friday, meanwhile, is "Orange and Black Day," when students will be walking around in school colors in anticipating of the Friday night football game.
On Tuesday afternoon the four classes competed in the annual "Homecoming Games" in Colbert Gymnasium.
Homecoming Week sports started Tuesday with CHS Lady Jacket Volleyball games -- freshmen, JV and varsity -- against Sesser-Valier. After the games came the Homecoming Bonfire behind the gym in the grassy area. The Marching Yellow Jackets provided music and the Flag Team, Cheerleaders and Dance Team were all there to provide spirit.
The annual Homecoming Parade steps off at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 from the Randolph County Courthouse. The Student Council is coordinating the event and currently has 29 different entries signed up to march.
Following the parade, all alumni and Yellow Jacket fans are invited to the Chester Country Club for chili and other refreshments. The Homecoming party will reconvene after the homecoming game at the Country Club for more celebration.
At least nine former classes are celebrating Class Reunions this week: 1954, 1964, 1969, 1979, 1983, 1984, 1989, 1994, and 2014. Others may still appear that have not reported as of this publication.
The 2019 Homecoming Football game between the Chester Yellow Jackets and the Vienna Eagles will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday in W.O. Smith Field. Pregame activities begin at 6:30 p.m. with the arrival of the 2019 Marching Yellow Jackets.
Four juniors and six seniors have been nominated to the 2019 CHS Homecoming Court. Junior King candidates are Hayden Gendron and Gage Garniss. Junior Queen candidates are Josie Kattenbraker and Amelia Shemonic.
Senior King candidates are Chett Andrews, Christopher Schwier and Ethan Bert. Senior Queen candidates are Adeline Blechle, Cierra Creason and Ashtyn Jany.
The 2019 CHS Homecoming Queen will be crowned at halftime of the Homecoming Game on Friday. The 2019 Homecoming King will be crowned at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Homecoming Dance in the Juergens Gym. The dance begins at 8 p.m.
