The Board of Education of Chester Community Unit School District No. 139 met in the Chester School District Unit Office on February 18, 2010.  President Beers called the Regular Meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

The Sparta City Council is getting a do over. Monday the council approved an ordinance in hopes of solving a problem created years ago when erecting a new street.

The fifth annual Statewide Transition Conference for high school aged students and young adults with disabilities, their family members, teachers, vocational professionals, caregivers, health care professionals, college students, and community advocates will be held in Schaumburg, IL from November 8-10, 2009.  The conference, “Mission Transition; Destination Success”, will be held at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center and offers opportunities for participants to expand their visitors of the possibilities for students with disabilities for independent living, education and training, employment, community integration, health care, and self-advocacy.

The Chester High School LifeSavers group joined fellow suicide prevention groups from around the world Thursday September 10 at 8 p.m. in hosting a suicide awareness-prevention candlelight vigil.
Monday through Sunday September 7-13 was National Suicide Prevention Week across America and Thursday evening September 10 at 8 p.m. suicide prevention organizations around the world help candlelight vigils to create suicide prevention awareness.  Approximately 50 people, including 12 LifeSavers, four LifeSavers recruits and four LifeSavers Advisors, attended the Chester event held at the Chester Gazebo.

 Back in 1886 John Boyle O'Reilly wrote, “A dreamer lives forever, and a toiler dies in a day.” Whether you agree or disagree, most dreams don’t come true without a lot of toil.  On Sunday, August 30, some 300 people gathered at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Evansville, for a worship service that was part of the dedication of the new school building for Christ Our Savior Lutheran High School. It was a dream that came true that took a lot of toil and effort.

Staci G. Clayborne of Belleville has been named assistant vice president for student development at Southwestern Illinois College. Her appointment began Aug. 1.

Registration is now open for the September 12, 2009 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before August 7, 2009. The national ACT September exam is the earliest college admissions test date of the school year. For high school seniors, the September test is an excellent opportunity to receive test results in time for early decision applications.

Additional sections of Math and Sociology classes have been added to this fall’s class lineup at the Southwestern Illinois College Red Bud Campus to accommodate student interest for the classes.
“We have added another section of MATH 94 at the campus to allow additional students to enroll in a day class. The three previously scheduled sections reached maximum enrollment,” notes Math and Sciences Division Dean Amanda Starkey.
The new daytime section, MATH 94-084 Basic Algebra, will meet from 11 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, from Aug. 24 to Dec. 14. The class is an introductory course in algebra.
