Lenita Byrd Peters, 88, of Du Quoin, made her transition from physical to spiritual life at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Lenita was a homemaker. She was a member of the Smith Memorial AME Zion Church in Du Quoin. Lenita served in the Helen Berkley Peters Missionary Society.

She was born Dec. 6, 1930 in Chicago, from the union of Napoleon and Annie (Hinton) Byrd. She was the second child born to this union.

She married John Braxton Peters Sr. on Jan. 20, 1947 in Chicago, and he preceded her in death on June 15, 2017.

They were parents to Vernelet Braxton Peters Sr. and John Braxton Peters Jr. (deceased).

To mourn her passing and cherish her precious memory, Lenita leaves one son, Vernelet B. Peters Sr., and wife, Diane, of Du Quoin; stepchildren Angelica Mayer of Germany, Nathan Johnson of Chicago, Jennifer Long and husband Joseph of Washington, D.C., and DeShera Myers of Carbondale; five grandchildren, Vernelet B. Peters Jr., and wife, Lisa, of Wisconsin, Lenita Benton of Galesburg, Greta Sullivan of Quincy, Evan Peters of Galesburg and Wendy Cotton of Chicago; two brothers, Albert Byrd, and wife, Bernice, of Chicago, and Richard Byrd, and Irene, of Luverne, Alabama; one sister, Jane Williams, of Chicago; three sisters-in-law, Juel Farquhar of California, Clara Hernandez of California and Virginia Peters of Chicago; two brothers-in-law, Clarence Peters, and wife, Carol, of Harvey, and Jan Peters, and wife, Sylvia, of Knoxville, Tennessee; and a host of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and close friends.

Lenita was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, John Braxton Peters Jr.; one brother, Sylvester N. Byrd; and three sisters, Wanda Brown, Evelyn Williams and Gloria Long.

Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16 at the Smith Memorial AME Zion Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Theresa Flagg officiating.
