Golf CHS's James finishes 29th in state tourney

Chester High School golfer Jarrett James tied for 29th place at the 2018 IHSA Class 1A State Golf Tournament in October.

YellowJacket team members James, Jaden Mott and Chett Andrews all qualified for the Class 1A Sectional Tournament October, with James moving on to the state tournament.

The Lady Jackets competed at the Carterville Regionals but failed to advance to Sectionals. Alyssa Place was Chester's top golfer with a score of 115. She missed qualifying by one stroke as two other Lady golfers qualified with scores of 114.

The CHS Boys' Golf Team competed at the IHSA Class 1A Regional Match in Campbell Hill/Trico October 2. There were 68 golfers competing in the match and three Chester golfers advanced out of the Regional to Sectional action.

Chester's James was the regional runner-up finishing second out of the field of 68 golfers with a score of 77, three strokes behind the regional champion Edward Brees, a junior from Trico. Brees shot 74 to win the regional champion title.

Other YellowJacket golfers included Chett Andrews (13th tie, 86); Jaden Mott (18th, 89); Jakob Cushman (32nd tie, 97); Jacob Wingerter (44th tie, 102); and Kaden Freytag (44th tie, 102). As a team, the YellowJackets finished 4th out of the field of 11 teams.

James, Mott, and Andrews traveled to Effingham St. Andrews Oct. 8 to compete in the 2018 IHSA Class 1A Sectional Golf Tournament. There were 112 golfers battling to qualify to advance to state.

James was the 2018 Effingham Sectional Runner-Up with his score of 73. Only Oakley Gee of Carmi-White County did better, shooting a 72 to edge James by one stroke.

James made the trip to Bloomington for the 2018 Class 1A IHSA State Golf Tournament Oct. 12-13 at the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.

James did very well in his first state tournament appearance, finishing in an 8-way tie for 29th place with a score of 83.

Marcus Smith, a Winnebago junior was this year's State Champion with his score of 71. Runner-Up Chase Piehler of Beardstown, a senior, shot 74. .

Christy James, Jarrett's mother said, "I am beyond proud of Jarrett this season. In all of his regular season matches this year was the Low Medalist each time. He tied at the annual Chester Invite and was 4th at the Nashville Invitational. Jarrett tied for second at Regionals and was the runner-up at Sectionals. That was just icing on the cake."

"Jarrett's consistency is what is impressive and he carries himself so well throughout every match. At matches across the region people always ask me of Jarrett ever shoes any emotion. I tell them he always seems to have his game face on. We really look forward to what he can accomplish in his last two years at CHS."
