ST. LOUIS -- Southern Illinois freshman Riley Klingelberg was named Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. This is his first time receiving the weekly honor.
Klingelberg was SIU's top finisher at the NC State Wolfpack Intercollegiate, as he shot even-par with rounds of 73, 68, and 75 for a three-round total of 216. Klingelberg's round two score of 68 was his second career round in the 60s. The Murrieta, Calif. native placed 19th out of 87 golfers, which was his third-straight top-20 finish to open the 2019-20 season.
Klingelberg's play helped Southern to a ninth-place finish out of 15 teams. The field featured seven teams that ranked top-100 in latest golfweek rankings and four that competed at the 2019 NCAA Regionals. Southern managed to place ahead of top-100 opponents Jacksonville and Maryland and just two strokes behind Virginia Tech.
