The Chester Chamber of Commerce has canceled their annual awards banquet due to the recent increase of COVID-19 cases. Instead, they will go to various venues over the next two months and present the awards to the recipients.
Linda Schafer is the 2021 Business Person of the Year. She was the first award presented, on Sept. 12, when Chamber Executive Director Linda Sympson went to the First Baptist Church.
Schafer retired in May after owning and operating Schafer Child Care Center for 45 years. She was nominated for the 2021 award by Don Berry, who introduced at the church.
Schafer and her husband, Dwain, bought Kinderella Child Care from Jean Grammer back in 1976. Schafer worked hard and maintained the center as a state-certified and licensed child care facility. In her 45 years of service, she cared for and gave instruction to hundreds of children -- toward the end some of them were grandchildren of students Schafer had taught years ago.
Schafer thanked the chamber for the honor and also gave credit to her dedicated staff, Suzann Spindler, Lois Wingerter, and Megan Ritz who were all there, watching.
Sympson said the Chamber will later present several other awards including Chester's Citizen of the Year Award. She would not divulge any names or venues but added that she feels Chester will be much in agreement with their selections.
