First United Methodist at 100: Celebration continues despite social distancing
The First United Methodist Church in Chester is celebrating its 100th year anniversary throughout 2020, and although the congregation can't worship together these days, they are staying close to the church and each other on Facebook or on the church website via prerecorded services. In January the Church began celebrating its centennial in the church at 871 State St. in Chester. The congregation has been there since 1920 -- the cornerstone was laid July 11, 1920.

Ellis Grove firefighters, Relay team raise funds to 'Knock Out Cancer'
On March 13 the Relay For Life team Let's Knock Out Cancer joined the Ellis Grove Fire Department to host a fish fry -- but not your usual fish fry. The meal had fried whitefish and catfish, corn dogs, chicken tenders, hush puppies, onion rings, french fries, potato salad, slaw, baked beans, bread and drinks.

Join Extension educators Austin Little and Erin Garrett as they lead a virtual walk and talk to identify plants, herbaceous flowers and flowering shrubs native to southern Illinois. The webinar will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 8.

SIU alumni pony up to help current students hurt by pandemic
More than $240,000 has been collected by the SIU Foundation to help SIU students who are in financial crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many college students are currently struggling to continue their education. Some lack adequate technology or internet access to make the sudden transition to online learning.

Chester Senior Center serving lunches on Mondays, Wednesdays
The Chester Senior Center is continuing to serve lunches on Mondays and Wednesdays. According to Donna Wolters, seniors can call the center at (618) 826-5108 to reserve either a curbside or delivery meal.

WSIL will televise Bald Knob Cross sunrise Easter service
For the first time in 84 years, the public is not invited to the Easter Sunrise Service being held April 12 atop Bald Knob Mountain in Alto Pass. Due to the current COVID-19 stay-at-home order, however, the service will be televised on WSIL-TV Channel 3 and livestreamed from WSIL TV website and Facebook page.

Methodist Men donate to CHS band trip to Florida
The Methodist Men of First United Methodist Church in Chester donated $253.33 to the Chester High School Music Department after several music students worked the group's recent Ham and Bean Dinner. The donation will be equally divided among the workers and deposited in their Music Patrons trip accounts for the upcoming band and swing choir trip to Florida at which time they will perform at Disney World.

Randolph Society Foundation Honors The unforgettable Irvin Peithmann and Ruth Robinson Gilster
This is the last of five biographies of the Randolph Society's inductees into the Class of 2020. The Randolph Society Foundation Board is pleased to announce that Irvin Peithmann and Ruth Robinson Gilster, preservationists who were dedicated to keeping the history of Randolph County alive, will be inducted into the 2020 class of honorees.
