A Gilster-Mary Lee tractor-trailer hauling popcorn overturned along State Route 3 three-quarters of a mile south of Dew Drop Landing on Thursday.
According to the Illinois State Police, a 2006 Freightliner was traveling south on Route 3 around a curve when the vehicle - driven by 56-year-old Duane E. Cruz, of Jackson, Mo. - left the roadway and overturned on its passenger side in the ditch.
The ISP’s preliminary report stated Cruz told responding law enforcement he swerved to miss an animal in the road, thereby causing the accident. He was cited for improper lane usage and reportedly suffered minor injuries in the wreck.
Cruz was transported to a local hospital via MedStar Ambulance for evaluation and treatment. The accident was reported at 5 a.m., with crews needing several hours for towing and cleanup.
An additional tractor-trailer was brought in to transfer the spilled cargo.
• Bluff Road accident
A 21-year-old Modoc man was injured in a single-vehicle accident on Feb. 10 on Bluff Road at Roscow Hollow Road.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office crash report, Lance Jones was driving a 2006 Chevrolet IMT eastbound on Bluff Road. Jones did not negotiate the curve at Roscow Hollow Road and ran off the south side of the roadway.
The IMT then struck a guardrail on the south side of Bluff Road and slid into a creek, coming to rest facing north.
Jones was taken to Red Bud Memorial Hospital with unspecified injuries. No citations were issued at the scene, with the accident being reported at 12:35 a.m.
• Olwine Road accident
A 16-year-old Baldwin woman was taken to Sparta Community Hospital after a single-vehicle accident on Feb. 6 on Olwine Road.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office accident report, Mariah P. Surdyk was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu east on Olwin Road when she reportedly swerved to miss oncoming traffic and exited the right side of the roadway.
The Malibu struck and damaged a retaining wall with brick veneer at a residence on Olwine Road. No citations were issued at the scene and the accident was reported at 5:29 p.m.
• Swanwick Street accident
Chester police were called to the scene of a two-vehicle traffic crash in front of Chester High School on Feb. 9 at 3:20 p.m.
Upon arrival, police discovered the driver of a 1999 Dodge Caravan, identified as 67-year-old Donald L. Pelate of Chester, was backing up in an attempt to park along the roadway when his foot reportedly became stuck, causing the vehicle to lunge backward into a parked 2014 Ford 150 pickup.
The Ford was occupied by 50-year-old Adena L. Penford, of Ellis Grove. Penford also had a child in the vehicle.
A minor injury was reported at the scene, but an ambulance transport was refused by the injured party. No citations were issued in the accident and both vehicles were driven from the scene without the assistance of tow services.
• State Route 4 accident
A 73-year-old Steeleville man suffered a medical condition prior to a Jan. 31 crash on State Route 4 north of Lake Camp-A-Lot.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office crash report, Everette Moore was traveling north on Route 4 a half-mile south of Route 150 when he suffered a medical incident, causing the loss of consciousness.
The 2010 Ford Ranger that Moore was driving exited the right side of the roadway and came to rest in a wooded area. Extrication was performed by Steeleville and Percy firefighters and Moore was transferred to St. Louis University Hospital.
An 11-year-old passenger in Moore’s vehicle, Logan Smith of Ava, was not injured. The accident was reported at 3:41 p.m.
