The Saluki women's swimming and diving traveled to Normal on Saturday and pulled out two big wins over Power-Five conference foe Illinois and Missouri Valley Conference rival Illinois State.

SWIMMING: DHS's Cravens, Halstead compete at Sectional

Du Quoin High School swimmers Olivia Cravens and Madeline Halstead both competed this past weekend at the IHSA Girls Swimming & Diving Sectional in Springfield, and Cravens brought home a medal for her sixth place showing in the 100 yard freestyle out of 41 participants. Cravens was also ninth overall in the 50y freestyle out of 42 swimmers. Halstead was 26th in the 100y freestyle and 14th of 19 in the 500y freestyle. Cravens is pictured with her medal from the 100y freestyle.

SWIMMING: Du Quoin repeats at SISL Championships

For the second straight year, and the fifth year in the last six, the Swimming Indians are champions of the Southern Illinois Swim League after beating out six other squads at Saturday's league championship meet at the Du Quoin Municipal Pool.Herrin held a slim lead about three-fourths of the way through the meet, but Du Quoin rallied late with wins in six of the ten freestyle relay races to finish with 601 points to the Tigersharks' 559. Salem was third with 427 points, followed by Marion (317.5), Anna (157), Mt. Vernon (98.5) and Carbondale (30).Four Swimming Indians brought home first place High Point honors for their age group - Mikah Montgomery (girls 7-8), Maddax Thompson (boys 7-8), Olivia Cravens (girls 13-14) and Paxton Higgerson (boys 13-14) - with ten others finishing in the top three, giving Du Quoin fourteen individual trophies along with their League Championship.Top-three finishers for the Indians included Kelby Funk (2nd, girls 6 & under), Mckenzie Eaton (3rd, girls 6 & under), Bryson McClanahan (2nd, boys 6 & under), Kallie Oestreicher (3rd, girls 7-8), A.J. Keith (2nd, boys 7-8), Adalyn Darnell (3rd, girls 9-10), Makoa Montgomery (2nd, girls 11-12), Meesha Montgomery (3rd, girls 11-12), Quinn Kirkpatrick (2nd, girls 15-18) and Caleb Gomes (3rd, boys 15-18).Nine Du Quoin team records also fell at the SISL Championships, including the girls 11-12 medley relay mark. Makoa Montgomery, Lauren Heape, Lindsey Gossman and Meesha Montgomery improved the Indians record they already held to 2:26.50, which is also a new SISL record. Two other Du Quoin relay records were set as well - the girls 7-8 medley (Claire Rose, Mikah Montgomery, Kallie Oestreicher, Ellee Green; 1:34.97) and the girls 15-18 medley (Quinn Kirkpatrick, Haley Kuhnert, Olivia Cravens, Maci Montgomery; 2:15.25).Cravens improved a pair of her records in the girls 13-14 division, swimming the 50 meter freestyle in 29.14 and the individual medley in 1:13.12. She won both of those events as well as the 100m freestyle. In the same girls 13-14 division, Amelia McLain bettered her team-best time in the backstroke to 33.91.Kirkpatrick set a new mark in the girls 15-18 butterfly at 31.72, finishing second. She was a winner in the 50m freestyle. Higgerson (boys 13-14; butterfly, 28.91) and Keith (boys 7-8; 25m freestyle, 17.59) also improved team records they already held.Other Du Quoin swimmers who won at least one event on Saturday include Oestreicher (25m freestyle), Mikah Montgomery (50m freestyle, breaststroke), Makoa Montgomery (50m freestyle, backstroke), Meesha Montgomery (100m freestyle), Haley Kuhnert (girls 15-18; breaststroke), Keith (25m freestyle, backstroke), Thompson (50m freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly) and Higgerson (breaststroke, butterfly, IM).Complete results for the Swimming Indians appear on the scoreboard page.

SWIMMING: 3 Dolphins win High Point Awards at SSC Championships

Pinckneyville's Ava Adcock (girls 8 & under), Karsen Konkel (boys 9-10) and Savannah Cheek (girls 15-18) each brought home the High Point Award for their age group at Saturday's Shawnee Swim Conference Championships in Carlyle, where the Dolphins placed fourth amongst the six teams competing with 224.5 points.Carlyle won the meet with 354 points, followed by Nashville (270.5) and Millstadt (268).A. Adcock won all three of her races - backstroke, butterfly and freestyle - as did Cheek (individual medley, backstroke, butterfly) and Konkel (IM, butterfly, freestyle).Dolphins Landen Carter (2nd, boys 8 & under), Steven Hirte (2nd, boys 11-12) and Nile Adcock (3rd, boys 11-12) also placed in the top three of the individual point standings at the end of the meet. Carter was a winner in the butterfly, Hirte took first in the freestyle and the breaststroke.A. Adcock, Konkel, Cheek, Carter and Hirte accounted for all twelve of Pinckneyville's wins at the SSC Championships meet. No relay teams were victorious for the Dolphins, but seven of them placed second.

SWIMMING: Indians complete fifth straight unbeaten season

For five straight summers, no team has out-pointed the Swimming Indians in the pool during a regular season meet, as Du Quoin crushed Marion 416-281 last Thursday to head into this Saturday's Southern Illinois Swim League Championships on a high note.Maddax Thompson was one of seven Indians to sweep all three of their individual races, and he broke the team record in the boys 7-8 25 meter breaststroke which had stood for 22 years. Thompson's 22.18 put him well under the 22.96 swam by Nick Hill back in 1993. Thompson also won his 25m freestyle and breaststroke races.Malik Jones (boys 9-10; butterfly, 25m freestyle, backstroke), Adalyn Darnell (girls 9-10; butterfly, individual medley, breaststroke), Paxton Higgerson (boys 13-14; butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke), Olivia Cravens (girls 13-14; butterfly, backstroke, 100m freestyle), Meesha Montgomery (girls 11-12; 50m freestyle, IM, 100m freestyle) and Amelia McLain (girls 13-14; 50m freestyle, IM, breaststroke) were the other six Du Quoin swimmers to go three-for-three last Thursday.Winners of two events for the Indians included Kallie Oestreicher (girls 7-8; butterfly, breaststroke), Makoa Montgomery (girls 11-12; butterfly, backstroke), Bryson McClanahan (boys 6 & under; freestyle, backstroke), Mikah Montgomery (girls 7-8; 25m freestyle, 50m freestyle), Henry Harsy (boys 9-10; IM, 50m freestyle), Rylan Ragar (boys 15-18; IM, backstroke) and Haley Kuhnert (girls 15-18; IM, breaststroke).The rest of the Du Quoin swimmers to win a solo event against Marion were Kelby Funk (girls 6 & under; freestyle), Quinn Kirkpatrick (girls 15-18; 50m freestyle), Mckenzie Eaton (girls 6 & under; backstroke), Haylee Crow (girls 7-8; backstroke), J.J. VanZandt (boys 7-8; 50m freestyle), Payton Wood (boys 11-12; 100m freestyle), Nicolas King (boys 15-18; 100m freestyle), Jakob Eaton (boys 9-10; breaststroke), Lauren Heape (girls 11-12; breaststroke) and Samuel Manning (boys 15-18; breaststroke).Fourteen Indians relay squads won at Marion. SWIMMING: Indians sink Herrin, 396-316

For the second time this season, the Swimming Indians took down the Herrin Tigersharks, this time doing it in their home pool at Du Quoin by the score of 396-316 on Tuesday night in a non-league meet.It was a meet of historic significance for boys 13-14 swimmer Paxton Higgerson, who kept his season-long winning streak going and broke a 26-year old Southern Illinois Swim League record in the 100 meter individual medley. Higgerson's time of 1:06.83 was one-thousandth of a second better than Mt. Vernon's Larry Jukes back in 1989. Higgerson also improved his team record in the butterfly, and added a third win on the night in the breaststroke.Both girls 11-12 relay teams also set team records. The same foursome of Makoa Montgomery, Lauren Heape, Lindsey Gossman and Meesha Montgomery broke the 2013 record in the freestyle relay with a time of 2:10.31, and the 2014 record in the medley with a mark of 2:27.03.In addition to Higgerson's big night, five other Indians also swam their way to three individual wins - Adalyn Darnell (girls 9-10; breaststroke, butterfly, IM), Meesha Montgomery (girls 11-12; 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, IM), Olivia Cravens (girls 13-14; 50m freestyle, breaststroke, IM), Quinn Kirkpatrick (girls 15-18; 50m freestyle, backstroke, butterfly) and Maddax Thompson (boys 7-8; 50m freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly).Other Du Quoin swimmers posting wins on Tuesday included Kelby Funk (girls 6 & under; freestyle, backstroke), Mikah Montgomery (girls 7-8; 50m freestyle, breaststroke), Kallie Oestreicher (girls 7-8; backstroke), Makoa Montgomery (girls 11-12; backstroke, butterfly), Lauren Heape (girls 11-12; breaststroke), Maci Montgomery (girls 15-18; 100m freestyle), Haley Kuhnert (girls 15-18; breaststroke, IM), A.J. Keith (boys 7-8; 25m freestyle, backstroke), Henry Harsy (boys 9-10; 25m freestyle), Malik Jones (boys 9-10; backstroke), Jackson Halstead (boys 9-10; breaststroke), Rylan Ragar (boys 15-18; backstroke) and Caleb Gomes (boys 15-18; breaststroke, IM).The Swimming Indians were victorious in eleven relay events on the evening.All of Du Quoin's top-four finishers in each event appear in list format on the scoreboard page of today's newspaper.The Indians have one regular season meet remaining - Thursday night at Marion - before the SISL Championships in Du Quoin on July 25.
